6 Questions You Should Ask Every Virtual Tour Company When Considering a Commercial Project
1. Are they experienced with commercial photography?
Find out right away if the virtual tour provider has experience that does not relate to residential photography. Although inexperienced companies will be very eager to sink their teeth into a commercial project and will probably give you a very good 'deal', you do not want them 'practicing' on your company's dime. Make sure to get references or check out testimonials.
2. Do they have more than one photographer that they can schedule for the day of the shoot? Some commercial projects will require time-sensitivity and you want to make sure that they can get the project done with minimal operational impact.
3. Can they provide technical support in the event that your website staff needs additional assistance?
When the project has been completed and you need to implement the tour on your website, it is too late to find out that your virtual tour company is limited to photography expertise.
4. Can they provide additional services such as videography, video production, professional CD development, or other marketing support? Some commercial projects require a bit more than just a virtual tour for a presentation. Unveilings, company seminars, corporate presentations and other events may require additional services. The virtual tour company that you select should be able to provide all of these services.
5. What kind of camera lens do they use?
If they use a fish-eye lens or one-shot solution, will the virtual tour software remove distortions in the tour (i.e. remove the fishbowl effect)? High-quality virtual tours should not distort any feature of your commercial location. If not corrected, fish eye lenses cause walls to look rounded and windows to look bowed. When shopping around for virtual tour providers, be sure to opt for companies that use a wide-angle lens as a standard. The wide-angle lens captures more of the location without sacrificing quality.
6. Is the final version of the virtual tour interactive? And how do they define 'interactive'? Make sure that the final product being created will have in-tour controls. Links to the side and the bottom of the tour are distracting and unprofessional.
You didn't think there was so much to look out for when selecting a virtual tour company? Keep in mind that the virtual tour industry is relatively young with very low barriers to entry as a first time start-up company. There are MANY virtual tour companies to select from, so when it comes to selecting a company for YOUR commercial project, be sure to ask all the right questions.
